ADSORPTION, MODELING AND DESORPTION OF p-XYLENE AND CARBONTETRACHLOR1DE IN DRY AND MOISTURE SOILS (M.Sc. Thesis) Çetin ÇAKANYILDIRIM GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY January 2003 ABSTRACT Carhontetrachloride and p-xylene adsorption desorption, on Na- montmorillorite and kaolen-114 minerals were studied, dry and 27, 48, 76 % relative humidity. The dynamic pulse technique is used in this study. Adsorption beheviours at dry condition can be explained with BET isotherm. Both organics are adsorped on the surface of the Na- montmoriilorite, more than kaoIene-114 holds. Carbontetrachloride adsorped more than p-xylene on the surface of the minerals. It was observed that, when surface is covered by water films carbontetrachloride and p-xylene adsorption decrease and change. The adsorption isotherms of the organics at moist surfaces are obtained theoritically by using a regression model. The experimental datas and theoritical results which are found for the same humidity values are matches, mainly. This study also includes desorption of carbontetrachloride and p-xylene from Na- montmorillonite and kaolen-114 clay minerals. Desorption of the both organics become faster if moist desorption gas is used. It was found that the amount of water, p-xylene and carbontetrachloride for the monolayer covered the surface of the Na-montmoriilonite with one layer are; 2.0265, 21.314, 109.97 mg, and for kaolen-114 are 0.8876, 5.972, 183.135 mg respectively.
