Examination of generational burden through the inventory of transferred family traumas: Modification and Turkish adaptation of the Historical Intergenerational Trauma Transmission Questionnaire

The study aimed to adapt the Historical Intergenerational Trauma Transmission Questionnaire (HITT-Q) into Turkish to examine trauma transmission through familial processes in Türkiye and to modify it in the context of traumas transmitted through familial processes. In the process of adapting and modifying the scale, translation and back translation steps were followed, the items measuring the transmission of historical traumas in the original scale were eliminated and alternative items were added. Experts' opinions were taken for the created item pool. Then cognitive interviews were conducted and the inventory was prepared for pilot study with 54 items. After the pilot study, 8 items were revised. The personal information form prepared by the researchers, the Transferred Family Trauma Questionnaire (TFAT-Q), Turkish Form of the Historical Transgenerational Trauma Transfer Inventory (HITT-Q-TF), the Life Events Checklist, Family Harmony Scale Short Form, the International Trauma Scale and the Transferred Psychological Trauma Scale were used as data collection tools. The participants consisted of 437 individuals aged between 18-74 years (X̄ = 25.72, SD = 9.45), 314 females and 123 males. The construct validity, reliability, and item analysis of the inventory were examined respectively through confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency coefficients, and corrected item-total correlation. The correlation coefficients of the sub-dimensions were evaluated by applying the test-retest method. The factor loadings of the items in all sub-dimensions of the inventory ranged between .37 and .93. The reliability coefficients of all sub-dimensions are .75 and above except for the "High Responsibility" sub-dimension. The corrected item-total score correlations of the items in the inventory ranged between .36 and .86 for the sub-dimensions and between .32 and .82 for the upper dimensions. Test-retest correlation coefficients ranged between .69 and .91. As a result of the analyses conducted with other measurement tools for the convergent validity of the inventory, it was seen that the values showing positive and negative correlations were compatible with the predicted results. The analyses show that the Inventory of TFAT-Q (HITT-Q-TF), which consists of 9 sub-dimensions and 50 items, is a reliable measurement tool and that a total score can be obtained from the "Family vulnerability", "Child vulnerability" and "Resilience" sub-dimensions.
