The dictionary of Nev'î Divanı (Corcondance and functional dictionary)

In this work, the words, all of which are taken from 750 poems in Nev'î Divanı, are grouped and presented in the form of a dictionary. This work is meant to be a functional dictionary, rather than a standard dictionary. After each word is indexed contextually, according to their meaning in the texts, these words are analyzed from the aspects of their tones and styles. Words are evaluated in several categories according to their meaning in the context. Then they are compared to other works created at the same literary period and to other literary works of the same genre, created by the contemporaries of the time. Thus emerges the vocabulary of a particular poet from different aspects such as phrases, idioms, proverbs, terms and words of foreign origins. At the same time, words are also compared and discussed in terms of how frequently they are used and thus how distinctive they are. The vocabulary is also evaluated according to its being coherent or contrarian to the elements of Ottoman Culture. The purpose here is to discover the way a poet of the time plays with the language, and to determine how the qualities of the language he/she embraces influence his/her psychology and artistic personality. It is envisioned that this work will contribute to several other studies on literary tones and styles positively with a different perspective.
