Dramaturgy of 'Gılgameş' opera by Nevit Kodallı

The Epic of Gilgamesh is an important work that has the distinction of being the first written text in the history. Looking at world literature, the Epic of Gilgamesh has inspired artists in many countries. Contemporary Turkish composer Nevit Kodallı adapted this important piece to the opera. Orhan Asena, the librettist of the opera, gave an original interpretation to the Epic of Gilgamesh. Dramaturgy is an analysis method used to reveal the general structures, subjects and staging techniques of all the works written for the stage. As a result of the survey conducted for this research, it is seen that dramaturgical analyses were performed on a limited number of opera. In this study, the dramaturgy of Gılgameş Opera was aimed to make this work more comprehensible and it was tried to explain what kind of thoughts the opera puts forward and considering the cultural tendencies of the period. Information was given about the life and composition of the composer Nevit Kodallı. The historical changes and processes of the concepts of "dramaturgy" and "dramatic opera" which is the types of the opera are discussed and explained. The research was carried out by using descriptive analysis and document analysis which are the types of qualitative research. 'Document analysis' involves the analysis of materials containing information about the cases or cases that are aimed for investigation (Yıldırım; Şimşek, 2006: 187). In the study, the dramaturgical analysis steps used for Gilgamesh Opera are cultural tendencies of the period in which it was written, identity analysis, event index, plot, internal-external action, symbolic expressions, situations and events with contrast. In the dramaturgy study, it is aimed to reveal the main theme of the opera by identifying the common, different and omitted points of the libretto of the opera and the Epic of Gilgamesh.
