Ineffectiveness of international law by the hegemonic structure on the Nile Basin: The case of Egypt-Ethiopia

This thesis consists of three main chapters and a total of five sub-titles. In the first main part, the geographical structure of the Nile River is explained. Thus, it was aimed to provide a better understanding and schematization of the thesis. The second main part consists of two sub-titles. In the first sub-title, legal terms such as international waters, upper riparian, lower riparian are explained, and then international treaties and documents related to the subject are mentioned. In the second sub-title, it was aimed to explain the development and reason of the problem from general to specific by giving place to the agreements made between the riparians in the Nile River. In the chapter bearing the first sub-title of the third main chapter, Egypt's connection with the Nile river since the past and how the hegemony was formed in the region were examined at the same time. In addition, it is explained how Egypt maintains its hegemony with the recent developments and what Ethiopia can do in return. In this section, it is understood that the "power" of states, which consists of both military and international cooperation, is more important than their dependence or potential use on the river in the sharing of the Nile River waters. Thus, it is understood that new agreements that may arise on the sharing of the Nile River waters will emerge depending on these power relations.
