Abstract (EN)

During the development of the teeth, dental anomalies occur as a result of the cessation of the formation of the dental lamina due to external factors or the deformation of the dental lamina. Supernumerary teeth are teeth or tooth like structures that appear in addition to the normal dentition in any region of the dental arch and originate from the tooth germ. In this retrospective study, it was aimed to evaluate the prevalence, characteristics and distribution of supernumerary teeth by using panoramic radiographic data of 7085 patients who applied to Gaziantep University Department of Pediatric Dentistry. Descriptive statistics were given as numbers, percentages, mean and standard deviation. In this study, the prevalence of supernumerary teeth was found to be 1.73%. Of the 7085 patients evaluated, 123 (1.73%) had 148 supernumerary teeth. The mean age of 123 patients with supernumerary teeth was 9.31±1.73 years (5 to 12 years). Of 123 patients, 80 (65.04%) were male and 43 (34.96%) were female. One supernumerary tooth was detected in 101 patients (82.11%), two in 20 patients (16.26%), three in 1 patient (0.81%), four supernumerary teeth in 1 patient (0.81%). Most of the supernumerary teeth (89.18%) were in the premaxilla. It was determined that 98 (66.21%) of 148 supernumerary teeth were conical, 30 (20.27%) were supplemental (normal size and shape) and 20 (13.51%) were tuberculate (a tubercle in the cusp or crown). It was found that 104 (70.27%) of the supernumerary teeth were impacted and 100 (67.56%) were in the normal (vertical) position. According to the results obtained from the study, early diagnosis of supernumerary teeth and appropriate treatment planning are important in terms of preventing possible complications and reducing the need for long and costly treatments that may be required later.
