The sleep quality of neurosurgery clinic inpatients

The Sleep Quality of Neurosurgery Clinic Inpatients The aim of the study is to determine the sleep quality of neurosurgery clinic inpatients. The research was carried out between April 2013 and March 2014 at Inönü University Turgut Özal Medical Center neurosurgery clinic. The population comprised all patients who had been staying at the neurosurgery clinic between April and June 2013. As for the sample, it comprised randomly selected 140 patients who had been staying at the neurosurgery clinic for at least a week between, who were (over) 18, who could maintain communication and who agreed to participate in the study. Prior to the implementation, written consent of Malatya Clinic Research Ethics Committee and Turgut Özal Medical Center's Head Physician was obtained. The data were collected via face-to-face interviews and by means of patient introduction form, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index . Frequency, percentage, standard deviation, t-test for independent groups, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were performed in the statistical evaluation of the data. Of the patients, 43.6% were women and 33.6% were hospitalized due to intracranial mass diagnosis. The patients' Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index mean score was found to be 7.63±4.04. Of the subcomponents, subjective sleep quality mean score was 1.38±1.01, sleep latency mean score was 1.52±1.07, mean sleep duration score was 1.57±1.07, habitual sleep efficiency mean score was 0.61±0.94, sleep disturbances mean score was 1.29±0.53, use of sleep medication mean score was 0.41±0.90, daytime dysfunction mean score was 0.82±0.97. It was determined that female participants' quality of sleep was worse than that of males and patients' other introductory and medical characteristics did not influence quality of sleep at a significant level. In conclusion, it was determined that neurosurgery patients' quality of sleep is highly unfavorable. Key words: Sleep, Sleep Quality, Neurosurgery, Nursing, Patient
