A comparative analysis of Norwegian and Turkish proverbs

Proverbs are concise expressions that have evolved over time and have been completed with rhetorical purity and simplicity. They are based on the common beliefs and universal values. They are rhetorical entities that reflect the thought and culture of the nation to which they belong to. They are valuable treasures that carry the most rooted and solid expressions in the language to the present and will carry them to the future. In retrospect, it is seen that there have been historical and cultural ties between Scandinavians and Turks since ancient times. These ties reached climax when Charles XII of Sweden sought for political asylum in Turkish territory in 1709 and governed his country from Turkey for more than five-year time period. The start of the these relations, on the other hand, if the European Huns' entrance to Scandinavia will be regarded as the start, can be taken back to the Ancient Age, but unfortunately, studies on Scandinavian languages, and especially on Norwegian, in Turkish are not sufficient in terms of quantity and quality. Scandinavian languages, which have a very long history, are a new field of research for Turkish linguists. It is hoped that this study will lead new language studies in the field. In the study, firstly, Norwegian proverbs were translated into our language and then the proverbs mentioned were examined in terms of their conceptual features. Ultimately, the Turkish equivalents of Norwegian proverbs were determined and an attempt was made to present a comparative analysis.
