According to census, kafirni sub-district (H.1246-H.1259)

ABSTRACT The most important factor for the presence of nations and states and for preserving their existence is the population. The population, which is especially used as a military power, also symbolizes the economic power of the state through its tax liabilities. Therefore, since the ancient times, the studies on population census have been carried out to determine the number of soldiers and the people who will pay taxes. The first samples of the census carried out in the Ottoman period were "cadastral record books". However, upon the abolition of guild of janissaries in the Sultan Mahmud II period, the first censuses made in the modern sense were conducted so as to especially meet the military needs. Males were recorded in the censuses carried out in this period. Since the population of men and women in a region is approximately the same throughout the history, it is not difficult to determine the whole population of that region according to the result of the census taken in the Sultan Mahmud II period. Multiplying the male population by two will enable the researcher to have the approximate number of the whole population in the related region. The population records of the Kafirni / Kafirli (Almus) sub-district affiliated to Tokad sanjak of Sivas province, which constitutes the subject of our study, were recorded during this period. These are 2285 (2585), 2283, 2287, 2372, 2348, and 2349 numbered population record books. The data obtained as a result of the examination of these books were evaluated. In these books, some information were provided about the household names, names, father's names, physical characteristics, disability and military service status of the people living in the villages affiliated to Kafirni / Kafirli sub-district.
