Analysing the sound in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's cinema

The early years of world cinema history are divided into two periods: the sound and silent periods. Cinema, which is a visual and auditory art, has been at the forefront with its visuality from the first moment it emerged. On the other hand, many technological experiments were made in order to accompany the sound with the image. As a result of these experiments, sound, like image, has become an integral part of cinema. In Turkish Cinema, technical developments in the first period lagged behind the world. Especially in the 2000s, with the development and cheapening of technology, the possibility of technical equipment used in sound films is increasing. In this respect, independent- auteur directors emerging in this period benefit from both visual and audio technical developments. Nuri Bilge Ceylan is one of the most important directors in terms of sound design in recent Turkish Cinema. Accordingly, in this study, the sound element in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's films is analyzed and evaluated on the basis of meaning. As a sample, the films Kasaba, Üç Maymun, Bir Zamalar Anadolu'da and Kış Uykusu were included in the study. The analyzed films are award-winning productions from various festivals and competitions. In the study, the methods and purposes of using sound in the scenes were analyzed by descriptive method. In this context, dialogues, music and effect elements in Nuri Bilge Ceylan cinema were analyzed using the methodology in Mustafa Sözen's study titled "Sound Design in Cinema as an Aesthetic Element and a Sample Film Analysis". As a result of the study, it is understood that Ceylan attaches importance to sound design as much as visual aesthetics and narrative in his films.
