Serum vitamin D level in obese patients and it's relationship between metabolic syndrome

Abstract (EN)

In this study mean serum 25 (OH) Vitamin D level of population was 18.5±8.4 ng/dl. This mean level had been 16.8 ± 7.3 ng/dl for metabolic syndrome obese patients, 18.3±8.6 ng/dl for non metabolic syndrome obese patients and 21.2 ±8.9 ng/dl for healthy control subjects. Mean serum level of 25 (OH) Vitamin D was the highest in control group and was the lowest in obese metabolic syndrome group. When groups were compared which each other; statistical significant difference was found between obese metabolic syndrome group and control group (p=0.001), also between obese nonmetabolic syndrome group and control group (p=0.014).Negative correlation between body mass index, triglyceride and serum 25 (OH) Vitamin D level was found. There has been found negative correlation between insulin resistance and 25(OH) Vitamin D level, but this was not statistically significant. Also there has been unsignificant positive correlation between 25(OH) vitamin D and HDL cholestrole.Therefore serum 25 (OH) Vitamin D was lowest in obese metabolic syndrome patients, this suggests us 25(OH) Vitamin D deficiency plays a role in metabolic syndrome pathogenesis; but more detailed and long term studies are needed to clarify this issue.
