Abstract (EN)
The main purpose of this research is to reveal how men experience obesity and the interaction of their experiences of obesity and masculinity identity. In other words, this study aims to reveal how men make sense of their experiences regarding the process of gaining weight, weight loss plans and body presentations through their masculinity identity. In this context, a qualitative case study research was conducted. In accordance with the purpose of the research, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 11 men with a BMI of 35 and above. The data obtained in the research were analyzed and interpreted within the scope of the meanings attributed to the body in the historical process, theories of body sociology, neoliberal health understanding, critical obesity literature and masculinity studies. According to the findings obtained as a result of the research, men with obesity can meet the health discourses of the neoliberal paradigm with two different strategies such as internalizing and resisting. In addition, men with obesity internalize the hegemonic codes of masculinity reproduced through neoliberal citizenship by reorganizing them in order to protect themselves from the social disadvantages of obesity.
