Abstract (EN)

Obesity, a rapidly growing worldwide epidemic event, is linked to development of numerous types of cancer. Role of obesity on prostate cancer development is unclear. In this thesis we performed 12 quadrant prostate needle byopsies by using transrectal ultrasonography from 209 patients whose tPSA levels were over 4 ng/ml or had suspicious findings at their digital rectal examinations. In these patients ages, heights, weights, waist to hip ratios, blood total PSA levels, prostate volume measurements by using transabdominal ultrasonography, inflammation extent and aggresiveness grades on prostate needle biopsy materials and Gleason scores on prostate cancer diagnosed biopsies were analyzed. The effect of obesity on tPSA levels, prostate volume, inflammation extent and aggresiveness parameters were investigated. Finally, in opposition to articles in literature, we found obesity does not have an effect on total PSA levels either in BPH or prostate cancer patients, prostate volumes, inflammation extent and aggressiveness grades on prostate needle materials, and no relationship was found between obesity and Gleason scores in prostate cancer patientsAccording to these findings, we suggest that we can apply the same criterias in obese patients in the examinations on BPH and prostate cancer, like in non-obese patients. Because we found that obesity does not have an effect on benign and malign prostate histopathologies.Key words: Prostate Cancer, BPH, Obesity, İnflammation
