Factors related to internet use and fear of missing advances in individuals with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

OBJECTİVES: This study aimed to examine the possible relationship between FoMO, problematic internet use and related conditions in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. METHODS: This research was directed with 50 patients diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, who were treated at Sakarya Training and Research Hospital between 01.06.2022 - 01.06.2023, and a control group with the same age, gender and educational status as these patients. 100 people (female n=68, male n=32) between the ages of 18-65 participated in the study. In data collection, "Sociodemographic data form", "Structured clinical interview form (SCID-5/CV), "Yale Brown Obsession Compulsion Scale (YBOCS)", "Fear of Missing Out Scale", "Barratt Impulsivity Scale", "Addiction Profile Index" '', ''Problematic Internet Use Scale (PICO) was used. The data were examined using the SPSS 22 program. RESULTS: Being unemployed and low-income levels were found to be significantly higher in the OCD patient group. Twitter usage was found to be significantly lower in the patient group. Barratt Impulsivity scale scores and Addiction Profile Index scores were found to be significantly higher in the OCD group. A correlation was detected between FoMO scores and Barratt Impulsivity scale scores in the OCD group. In the control group, FoMO was associated with social media and internet use for communication. In the control group, FoMO was found to be associated with the time spent on social media per day. In the patient group, problematic internet use was discovered to be associated with not being married. CONCLUSION: Impulsivity and excessive internet use for FoMO in OCD patients; Living alone and excessive time spent in front of the screen are also important predictors of problematic internet use.
