Comparison of different insight scales in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder OBJECTİVES: As a result of long-standing debates on the place and importance of insight in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder; from the point that there is insight in OCD, it has been reached to the point that there is no insight in a significant part of the patients. Insight was thought to be a determinant of severity, but this view has changed to that insight is only a subtype determinant for OCD. Scope and the measurement method of insight concept are controversial. There are many studies about the relationship between insight and clinical symptoms, and controversial results have been reached. This study aims to compare different insight scales and to examine the relations of these scales with clinical symptoms and metacognition. METHODS: This study was conducted in Sakarya Training and Research Hospital, Department of Psychiatry, with 64 patients between the ages of 18-65 who were diagnosed with OCD through SCID-1 for DSM-5. The Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) and Symptom Checklist, The Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale, Overvalued Ideas Scale, Schedule for Assessing the Three Components of Insight and Scale of Unawareness of Mental Disorder were administered by the physician. Maudsley Obsessive Compulsive Inventory, Beck Cognitive Insight Scale (BCIS) and Metacognition Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30) were self reported. A correlation analysis was conducted among the insight scales. RESULTS: No difference in insight levels was found according to demographic data. Correlation between OCD symptom severity and insight scales was not detected. No correlation was observed between insight scales and MCQ-30. A significant correlation was found between YBOCS and MCQ-30. Cognitive insights of the autogenous-type were found higher than the reactive-type. Significant correlations between insight scales, except BCIS, were found. CONCLUSION: No significant correlation was found between OCD symptom severity and 6 different insight scales; qualitative or quantitative, unidimensional or multidimensional evaluation of insight did not differ significantly. While there was no correlation between metacognitions and insight scales; a significant correlation was found between symptom severity and metacognitions.
