Abstract (EN)

PURPOSE: Spectrum of symptomatology of OSAS is quite wide. These symptoms help us to tend to OSAS but they are not diagnostic. Decrease of thyroidal hormones and overweight that are among the etiologic causes can be determined easily, low cost and directive for planning the therapy. Therefore; we checked out the levels of thyroidal hormones and investigated the corelation between body mass index (BMI) values and apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) in the patients that diagnosed as OSAS with polisomnography in our study.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included the patients that applied Dicle University Hospital Ear Nose and Throat Polyclinic and Sleep Disorders Center between June 2008 and November 2010, that diagnosed as OSAS according to PSG. The group was heterogen with regard to application complaints, most of the patients presented with snoring, the others presented with the complaints as the story of stop breathing during sleep that expressed by their partners, condition of extreme sleepiness in the daytime, tiredness, headache. Acoording to the results of PSG, first 100 patients are choosed randomly between the group that established as OSAS (AHI>5). There was not sex distinction between the patients.FINDINGS: Mean age was 48.79 of the patients that determined OSAS according to PSG. The age of women was changing between 24 and 76 that the mean age was 55.44. The age of men was changing between 24 and 77 that the mean age was 46.33. Between 100 patients, 33 had mild, 19 had moderate, 48 had severe OSAS clinic. There was hypothyroidism according to thyroidal hormon levels in 5 patients (2 mild, 3 severe OSAS) through these 100 patients. 2 patients were male, 3 patients were female that had hypothyroidism. There has found a positive and statistically important corelation between BMI and AHI at a ratio of %45.9 in all patients.RESULT: According to these data; it has been concluded that scanning hypothyroidism and measuring BMI in all patients that referred to sleep laboratories with suspected OSAS is
