Investigation of Toxoplasmosis Seropositivity in Pregnant Women Between January 2014-January 2019 and Clinical Follow-up and Results in Patients with IgM Positivity The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Toxoplasma gondii in pregnant women who applied to Afyonkarahisar University of Health Sciences, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Infectious Diseases. In addition, clinical and laboratory findings and the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis in pregnant women with the diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis infection was aimed to be followed. The clinical and laboratory findings of 4231 pregnant women between 15-49 years of age between January 2014 and January 2019 for the follow-up of normal pregnancies and records showing the infection status of fetuses and neonates of patients treated with suspected acute toxoplasma were evaluated. Toxoplasma IgG and toxoplasma IgM seropositivity and IgG avidity were determined using ELISA method. Seropositivity rates of toxoplasma IgG and toxoplasma IgM were 25.5% and 2.3%, respectively. The prevalence of toxoplasma IgG and IgM increased with increasing age. Avidity test results were low in 39 pregnant women, moderate avidity in 9 pregnant women and high avidity in 50 pregnant women. Sixty-three of the pregnant women with low and moderate avidity and fifty pregnant women with high avidity were included in the treatment group. Forty-five (71.4%) of the pregnant women who were treated showed compliance with treatment, while 18 (28.6%) did not. Six (13%) of fetuses or newborns of treatment-compatible pregnant women resulted in IUGR and / or abortion. In contrast, 8 (44.4%) of fetuses or newborns of non-compliant pregnancies resulted in IUGR and / or abortion. Ultrasonographic examination of pregnant women revealed IUGR in 13, placental changes in two, intestinal anomaly in one, cardiac dysrhythmia in four, pericardial effusion in one, cardiac failure in two, hydrocephalus in two, spina bifida in two, meningomyelocele in two, and ventriculomegaly in two. As a result, Toxoplasma gondii, which can cause miscarriages or stillbirths, is still among the important health problems in pregnant women in our region. We argue that serological methods can be used as a guide for physicians in the diagnosis of these infections and in clarifying suspicious situations by using IgG avidity test. However, the fact that IgM positivity and low avidity values persist for a long time as a result of toxoplasma infection makes it difficult to rule out acute toxoplasmosis during pregnancy, it is important to evaluate serological IgM and IgG together with avidity in the right diagnosis.
