Abstract (EN)

Odontogenic cysts are probably the most common locally destructive lesions of the skeleton. The mechanisms which are responsible for activation and proliferation of lining epithelium in odontogenic cysts remain uncleariNOS is produced by many cell types induced by a variety of immunological stimuli in pathological processesHSP27 and HSP60 play a role in the regulation of epithelial cell differentiation and protect cells against the cytotoxicity of inflammatory mediatorsThe aim of this study was to investigate the presence of iNOS, HSP27 and HSP60 in normal tissues and odontogenic cysts and their role in pathogenesis of diseasesExpression levels of the iNOS, HSP27 and HSP60 were studied using immunohistochemistry (using Ultravision Polyvalent HRP-AEC Kit, iNOS Ab-1, HSP27 Ab-1 ve HSP60 Ab-1) on tissue sections from 26 radicular cysts, 19 dentigerous cysts and 13 odontogenic keratocysts; noninfected dental follicle specimens from 18 impacted third molars were used as controls in this studyThe epithelial expression of iNOS and HSP60 in radicular cysts was significantly greater than the other cyst groups and control group. There was no significant difference in the epithelial expression of HSP27 between cyst groups and control group. The epithelial expression of HSP60 in odontogenic keratocysts were significantly lower than the other cyst groups and control groupIn conclusion, this study has shown that the expression of iNOS, HSP27 and HSP60 are involved in inflammatory process, and might play a role in the activation and proliferation of lining epithelium of cysts.
