The readiness levels of students for 9. grade geography class subjects

The purpose of this study is to determine the levels of readiness of students for 9. Grade Geography class subjects.The study aims to demonstrate whether there is a significant relationship between the sex, which is one of the personal variables, interest in Geography subjects, belief in being successful in the Geography class and the requirement for learning Geography.A success test was developed by the researcher in order to measure the readiness levels of the students. For this purpose, their achievements in the Grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 of primary education and some of these achievements were determined as pre-conditions for their learning in the 9. Grade. In parallel with specified achievements, test items were written and an expert was consulted on their opinion of the scope validity of the test items. As a result of the preliminary application conducted after the corrections in the test items were analyzed, the strength and distinctiveness indexes of the items were determined.The study was conducted with the participation of 520 students, in the 9. Grades of five secondary education schools located in central Muğla, the students were selected with the accidental sampling method.The data obtained were analyzed using the SPSS 19.0 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) package software. Within the scope analysis, frequency charts, descriptive statistics, pie and bar graphs, Kolmogorov Smirnov normality test, Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis H test were used.As a result of the study, it was determined that the readiness levels of students for 9. Grade Geography class subjects were not sufficient. Furthermore, it was concluded that the readiness level of students did not vary by sex, but it vary in a statistically significant way by interest in Geography class, requirement to learn the Geography subjects and belief in achieving success in the Geography class.Keywords: Geography Class, Ninth Grade, Readiness Level.
