A model proposal for the instructional development of faculty members: Case of School of Foreign Languages

Instructional development is one of the professional development dimensions that need to be focused on in order to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the learning-teaching process. Within this concept, it was aimed to determine the instructional development needs of faculty members working at School of Foreign Languages and to put forward a model proposal for the instructional development of faculty members in this study. The research is designed in explanatory sequential mixed method design. The participants of the study consist of faculty members working at the faculty of Educational Sciences and at the Schools of Foreign Languages at different universities in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 academic years and faculty members working at the School of Foreign Languages at Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University in 2019-2020 academic year. Quantitative data of the study was collected by The Needs Determination Questionnaire developed by the researchers. The qualitative data of the study were obtained from semi-structured interviews and open-ended survey form. Based on the data obtained, it was concluded that there is a need for instructional development, and a model proposal was designed for the instructional development of faculty members. The model proposal was implemented in the spring semester of the 2019-2020 academic year with the participation of faculty members working at Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University School of Foreign Languages. As a result of the application, it was concluded that there is an awareness of instructional development in faculty members and a change in their attitudes towards the learning-teaching process.
