The survey of the relationship between the sensitivity against turkish language usage and the attitudes related to reading habits of teacher candidates

The aim of this study is to determine the current status of the students at the Faculty of Education about the sensitivity against Turkish Language usage and reading habits. The study was carried out with a total of 856 teacher candidates, 562 girls and 294 boys, who were studying in Gaziosmanpasa University, Faculty of Education in Tokat. Data was collected in 2014-2015 academic year by using Personal Information Form, Sensitivity to Use of Turkish Language and Attitude towards Reading Habits (KOAITI) Scale. The scale of sensitivity to the use of Turkish, which is the scales, was developed by Coşkun (2012) and the attitude scale related to reading habit was developed by Gömleksiz (2004). In the analysis of the data, descriptive statistical analysis of the data such as frequency, percentage, minimum-maximum points, arithmetic mean and standard deviation were given. Again, determining the relationship between the reading habits of the pre-service teachers and age, gender, class levels, high school type, branch, mother education status, father's education status and family income status variables and age, gender, class levels, Kolmogorov-Smirnov (CS) test was used to determine the relationship between high school type, branch, mother education, father's education status and family income status. It was established that the data didn't show normal distribution. For this purpose, non-parametric tests such as Kruskal Wallis H test and Mann-Whitney U were applied. In this study, it was found that the teacher candidates were at a moderate level both in Turkish use sensibilities and book reading habits. In terms of reading habits, it is seen that the levels of benefit and affection sub-dimensions are higher than other sub-dimensions from six sub-dimensions of love, habit, necessity, desire, effect and benefit. In this respect, it can be said that most of the teacher candidates like reading books and believe in the benefit of them. When Turkish language sensitivity levels are evaluated in terms of sub-dimensions which are Turkish in social life, Turkish in verbal and written lecture, Turkish against alienation in native language and Turkish in education and training, it is located that teacher candidates have a good level related to the sensitivity against Turkish language use. In this study, high level of significant relationship was found between the pre-service teachers in terms of gender and branch variable. While there is a table in favor of female teacher candidates in gender variable; in terms of branch variable, results were found in favor of Turkish teachers. As a result, it is detected that a statistically significant low positive relationship between the reading habits of teacher candidates and their Turkish usage sensitivities.
