Investigation of the factors affecting new media literacy ofteachers and students

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the new media literacy levels of teachers and students were compared and the factors affecting the new media literacy of each group were examined. Among the quantitative research methods, causal comparative research design was used as a research design. The study group of the research consists of 581 teachers from different branches, as well as 1195 students studying in different schools from primary and secondary education levels. Data were collected from teacher and student groups through the demographic information form and the new media literacy scale. Descriptive analyzes, multivariate analysis of variance, independent group t-test and correlation analysis were performed for the research questions. According to the results of the study, the new media literacy of teachers and students is above average. There are differences in the new media literacy levels of teachers and students, which is in favor of teachers. There are differences in the new media literacy of teachers according to gender, having a personal computer and branches. However, it has been observed that male teachers' new media literacy is higher than female teachers. There was no difference in new media literacy according to the status of teachers' having social media accounts. It has been observed that there is a relationship between teachers' new media literacy and age, teaching time, average daily internet usage time, internet usage years, average daily social media usage time, years of social media usage and the duration of having a smartphone. While there is no differentiation in the new media literacy of the students according to their gender and place of residence, there are differences between students' status of having a personal computer, social media accounts and educational levels. In addition, it was observed that the new media literacy of female students was higher than male students. It has been observed that there is a relationship between students' new media literacy and age, teaching time, average daily internet usage time, internet usage years, average daily social media usage time, years of social media usage and the duration of having a smartphone. There are differences in new media literacy with the generations created depending on the age of the participants. Looking at the new media literacy in the context of the generation, the highest level of literacy is seen in the generation Y individuals. The findings obtained from these analyzes were discussed on the basis of the relevant literature and suggestions for future studies and applications were presented.
