A research on the teachers' status

With starting officially training teachers in 1848, teaching job has become a true occupation in our country in modem term. Although there are still some problems, after more than 150 years, teaching job has been widely accepted as a profession. But, it is hard to say that, the likely development has taken place in terms of teachers' social status. Except in Republic's first years, the teachers' social status hasn't been in the desired level. With this low level of social status, it isn't logical to expect teachers being very successful to prepare new generations to the future. The 21st century's accelerating changes require nations to be highly competitive. With the increasing need of education, while, more qualified teachers have to enter to the system, those teachers have to be supplied with every means necessary to increase their social status. There have been differences and fluctuations in social status of teachers within the 150 years in our country due to economical, political and cultural conditions. Although there is an increasing interest in the profession, the social status level of teachers is still decreasing. In this research, we aimed to find out which occupational and non-occupational factors are affecting teachers' social status most and, how they evaluate those factors. For this research, a questionnaire delivered to collected from state primary school teachers whose post were in Bahcelievler, Istanbul. After applying required statistics to the collected data, results evaluated accordingly. At the end of the thesis, along with conclusion, some solutions are offered for the problems that found by the research.
