Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to search the relationship among the meaning of life, life satisfaction, social comparison and internal-external locus control. Another aim of this study is to search whether the relationship among these four concepts will create any big difference in terms of gender, age, duration in teaching and, educational and marital status. The samples used in this paper are the teachers who have taught in the counties of İstanbul, Sultanbeyli,Üsküdar, Kağıthane, Bayrampaşa, Beylikdüzü, Ataşehir, Tuzla and Sancaktepe. They are 144 men and 219 women in number, that?s 363 in total. The research has been carried out in accordance with Comparative Relational Screening Model. Data Gathering Form, developed by the researcher, has been used as the assessment instrument so as to gather information about teachers? gender, age, duration in teaching and, educational and marital status. In order to learn the meaning of life for the teachers, life meaning scale developed by Steger, Frazier, Oishi and Kaler (2006) and adapted into Turkish by Akın and Taş (2011) has been practised. In order to measure life satisfaction, life satisfaction scale developed by Diener, Emmons, Larsen and Griffin (1985) and adapted into Turkish by Durak and his colleagues has been used. In order to determine social comparative levels, social comparative scale developed by Allan and Gilbert (1991) firstly as five-point form and adapted into Turkish firstly as six-point form by Şahin and Şahin (1992) and later readapted as eighteen-point form by Şahin, Durak and Şahin (1993) has been used. In order to determine internal-external locus control, Rotters? internal-external locus control scale developed by Rotter(1966) and adapted into Turkish by Dağ (1991) has been used. The datum have been analysed with Pearson Product-Moment Correlation, Unrelated Group T Test, Mann Whitney-U Test and `Kruskal Wallis H Test?.As the outcomes of the study, it is found out that there is a positive relationship between the present sub-dimension of life meaning, life satisfaction and social comparison; and a negative one with internal-external locus control. It is found out that the present meaning sub-dimension of teachers? meanings of life does not differ greatly in respect to gender, age, duration in teaching and, educational and marital status. In terms of the teachers? gender and marital status there becomes a big difference in their life meanings? searched sub-dimension, while there is not such a difference in terms of age, duration in teaching, and educational status. The teachers? life satisfaction differs greatly in terms of their gender but age, duration in teaching, educational and marital status do not affect the life satisfaction much. In the teachers? cases social comparison does not differ greatly in terms of gender and educational status but it differs in terms of age, duration in teaching and marital status. The teachers? internal-external locus control differs in terms of gender, age, and duration in teaching but it does not differ in terms of educational and marital status. In the light of the data obtained from the study, the results of the research has been discussed and made suggestions for the future researches. Keywords: Life meaning, life satisfaction, social comparison, and internal-external locus control.
