The relationship between teachers' job engagement level and job performance

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this research was to determine whether or not there is a significant relationship between work engagement levels and work performance perception of secondary school teachers and if work engagement predicts work performance or not. It was also analysed whether or not teachers' perceptions differ according to the factors such as gender, length of service, educational level, alma mater and location of the school. 1112 secondary school teachers working at public secondary schools in the province of Bolu in 2021-2022 educational year constituted the universe of the study. 334 teachers was included within the scope of this research. The data was collected online and correlational survey model was used in the study. Personal Information Form, Teacher Job Performance Scale and Work Engagement Scale were used in order to collect data. The gathered data was analysed by SPSS 22.0 packaged software. Mean and standard deviation were calculated by descriptive statistical techniques. Mann Whitney U test, ANOVA test, Kruskal Wallis test, Spearman Rho corelation and Linear Regression Analysis were also used to analyze the collected data. The findings of the study indicated that; the work engagement perception of the teachers who participated in the study was 'I agree', physical and emotional engagement perception subdimension was also 'I agree' and cognitive engagement perception was 'I totally agree'. Besides, work engagement perception of the participant teachers was 'frequently', adaptive and contextual performance subdimensions were also 'frequently' while the task performance perception level was 'always'. The teacher perceptions indicated a significant difference only in the task performance subdimension and cognitive engagement subdimension according to gender variable. At different levels positive oriented relation was determined between work engagement and its subdimensions and teacher job performance and its subdimensions within the scope of this study. As a conclusion, it was determined that work engagement is an important precursor of teacher job performance. Various suggestions were developed according to the findings.
