Determining the status of organic food preferences of teachers

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this research, is to inventigete knowledge, the resons of consumption of organic foods and the factors which determine their preferences for organic foods of the teacher.The research was conducted in the schools in Macka, Trabzon and Konak, İzmir and the individuals participated in this research were aimed to define in their own conditions by using cross hatching model. Study is performed on a total of 200 teachers of 112 from Macka, Trabzon and 88 from Konak, İzmir which were recruited by random selection method. Data were collected by a survey form which was developed by the researcher and frequency (f) and percentage (%) were calculated to determine the individuals? attitudes towards organic foods. In addition to this, single direction variance analysis (F test) and t-test was used to determine the status of organic food preferences of individuals by an analysis of some personal characteristics.Findings of the research showed that subects participated in the research generally prefer organic foods and the main reason for this preference is that they think these foods are more healthy and have higher nutritional status. The most important reason for consumers to not to prefer organic foods is that they think these foods are expensive. More than the half of the subjects of the research found their knowledge about organic foods insufficient and declared that they obtain their knowledge via internet and television.Another important finding of the research is that subjects participated in this research think that chemicals which are used in the production of agricultural products may cause cancer. In consideration with these findings, proposals were presented for future scientific researches to raise the awareness of individuals about the organic foods.Key Words: Organic food, organic agriculture, prefer.
