School principals' prestige: An investigation from the views of different segments of society

This study aims to examine the perspectives of individuals from different professions regarding the societal prestige attributed to school principals. The study group of this research, in which the phenomenological design was preferred as on of the qulitative research methods, consist of 20 participants living in Tokat province and practicing different professions. In-depth interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher. The data were analyzed using content analysis techniques. Findings indicate that participants' perceptions of prestige are primarily influenced by individuals' adherence to values, educational attainment, and the merit-based execution of their professions. Professions perceived as prestigious were those considered to be highly beneficial to society, difficult to attain, associated with a broad audience, and offering significant financial returns. Participants expressed respect for school principals they had encountered due to their authoritative leadership, protective attitudes, and value-oriented approaches. Half of the participants found the school principal profession recpectable, while nearly half said they did not find it respectable. Some participants suggested that the respectability of school principals depends on certain conditions. Those who regarded the profession as prestigious emphasized the principal's foundational role as a teacher, whereas those who did not highlighted the limited authority and lack of professional managerial training of school principals. It was also found that principals' personal qualities and behaviors significantly influence their perceived prestige. Furthermore, the quality of the school in which they serve and their identity as educators were seen as factors enhancing prestige, while deficiencies in their training and limited authority were seen as factors diminishing it. All participants suggested that legal reforms are necessary to enhance the prestige of school principals in society. Recommendations included improving principal training processes, increasing financial compensation, and restructuring their authority and responsibilities. Based on the research findings, it is recommended that measures be taken to enhance the societal prestige of school principals. These may include financial incentives, expanding authority, reducing administrative burdens, improving training quality, appointing support staff, and encouraging postgraduate education. It is recommended that researchers conduct this study with quantitative or mixed methods in the future and diversify the number of participants and geographical region.
