The relationship between the sportsmanship behaviors and the level of empatic tendencies in school sports and active football athletes: Şırnak province example

The aim of this research is to examine the relationship between the sportsmanship behaviors and empathy levels of football players who compete in school sports. In addition, in this study, it was also aimed to examine the sportsmanship behaviors and empathy levels of the participants in terms of gender, education level, age, duration of the branch and sportsmanship levels. The universe of the research consisted of 1091 licensed athletes playing football in school sports affiliated to Şırnak Provincial Directorate of Youth and Sports (GSİM), and the sample consisted of 500 participants selected on a voluntary basis. Demographic information form, multidimensional sportsmanship orientation scale and empathy scale in sports environment were applied to the participants in order to obtain the data in the study. SPSS 26.0 program was used in the analysis of the data, and after the descriptive statistics, the conformity of the data to the normal distribution was tested. Upon understanding that the data were normally distributed, independent groups t-test was used to compare the means of two independent groups, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used in the analysis of more than two groups, and Pearson Correlation Analysis was used to determine the level of relationship between continuous variables. The significance level was accepted as 0.05. In the results of the analysis of the data, significant differences were found in the sub-dimensions of the SOE scale "Cognitive Empathy in Sports" and the "Respect for the Competitor" scale according to the gender variable. According to the variable of educational status, a significant difference was found in the sub-dimensions of "Respect for Rules and Management" and "Respect for the Competitor" of the CBSY scale. According to the variable of playing football, significant differences were found in both scales, except for the "Commitment to Responsibilities in Sports" sub-dimension. According to the sports age variable, there is a significant difference in the sub-dimensions of the multidimensional sportsmanship orientation scale compared to the sports age variable. As a result of the research, it has been determined that being able to empathize in young, star and young age group athletes who compete in school sports football competitions has positive effects on displaying sportsmanship behaviors.
