Teacher views about increasing organizational spirituality at schools

The main purpose of this study was to examine the views of teachers about what to do for increasing organizational spirituality in educational institutions by determining the factors affecting organizational spirituality at schools. Being the first study on this subject in Turkey, organizational spirituality is thought to affect the work atmosphere in schools positively. As a method in the research, case study, one of the qualitative research designs, was used. The study group was composed of the teachers working in secondary schools in the Şehitkâmil district of Gaziantep province. In this qualitative research, the study group was determined by using convenience sampling. In order to investigate the factors affecting organizational spirituality of teachers in the schools and to determine what to do about the development of these factors, interviews were conducted with forty teachers working at twenty public secondary schools in the Şehitkâmil district in the academic year of 2017-2018. An interview form was used during the data collection phase and the data were analyzed with content analysis method. Five main themes and twenty sub-themes which affect the formation of organizational spirituality in schools were revealed. These were seen to be organizational values, job transcendence, meaningful work, sacrifice, and trust. As a result of the study, the most mentioned topics on how to increase organizational spirituality in schools are as follows: "schools need to have sincerity, collaborative learning, Islamic consciousness, a sense of belonging, spiritual leadership, positive energy, spiritual development, helping and sharing." These results are reported in a form which includes who can increase it, what to do and how to increase organizational spirituality.
