The effect of the reading circle method on reading comprehension and reading motivation in 6th grade Turkish courses

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the literature circle method on reading comprehension skills and reading motivation in secondary school 6th grade Turkish lessons and to examine students' opinions about the method. Explanatory sequential mixed design was used in the research. In the quantitative dimension of the study, quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest control group; In the qualitative dimension, a case study was used. The study group of the research consists of 81 students (41 experimental, 40 control group) studying in the 6th grade at Sema Eray Erdem Secondary School in Alanya district of Antalya province in the 2023-2024 academic year. Easily accessible case sampling method was used to determine the study group. During the 8-week application process, the literature circle method was used in the experimental group, and the control group was taught in line with traditional reading activities. In the research, 'Reading Comprehension Test, Text-Based Reading Motivation Scale and Semi- structured Interview Form' were used as data collection tools. For dependent and independent groups Chi-square and t-test were used in the analysis of quantitative data. Descriptive analysis and content analysis were used to analyze qualitative data. At the end of the research, it was determined that the literature circle method had a positive effect on students' reading comprehension skills and reading motivation. It was also determined that students expressed positive opinions about the literature circle method.
