Investigation of the use of upright basic letters in literacy teaching according to teachers' opinions

Language is one of the main features that distinguishes humans from other living things. Of course, using language is as important as the existence of language. Language has been used as the greatest communication tool since the existence of humanity. Various trainings have been given to use the language effectively. Reading and writing education is one of the most important of these trainings. Formal education and training institutions in which literacy teaching is carried out are schools. Analysis of teaching literacy in Turkey starting in the 2005-2006 academic year (sentence) method is provided terkedilerek transition to sound based sentence method. However, in the writing style, adjacent italic letters were used instead of vertical basic letters. During the process, some problems encountered in adjacent oblique writing (the lack of readability of student writing, frequent use in daily life, inadequate parent support, etc.) brought up the use of upright basic letters. As of 2017-2018 academic year, the Ministry of National Education has left the teacher to use adjacent italic or orthogonal basic letters as the writing style in literacy teaching. Master's thesis In the my study "examining the use of orthogonal basic letters in the teaching of reading and writing according to the opinions of teachers", the structured interview technique, which is a qualitative method, was used. As a sample, 53 primary school teachers working in the primary schools of Ceylanpinar district of Sanliurfa were determined. The data obtained from the participant teachers were tabulated and descriptive analysis was obtained. As a result, it is concluded that both writing styles (adjacent italics and orthogonal basic letters) have advantages and disadvantages, but in some areas (daily life) the use of orthogonal basic letters is more appropriate for participant teachers to use orthogonal basic letters in literacy teaching.
