Abstract (EN)

The pharmaceutical industry has become a profit tool for multinational corporations because of its monopolistic tendency with structural monopolistic features. Leaving the indispensable product, the medicine and pharmaceutical industry, to the dynamics of capitalist market economics, has serious implications for public rights. Today, it is seen that there is a system dominated by the capital and centralized by the multinational companies, rather than a system based on the absolute control and intervention of the public authority in the pharmaceutical market. The main aim of the study in this case is to explain how the oligopoly work in the pharmaceutical sector is, how it affects the operation of competition and legislation and practices in the world and in Turkey, and the necessary policy proposals for the establishment of a system based on the social and indispensable nature of the drug. In order to be able to do this examination, firstly the basic structure of oligopoly markets, examining drug markets in terms of supply and demand, analysis of the basic issues of the pharmaceutical market, patent protection, disclosure of research and development (R&D) and monopoly conditions, globalization and the effects of multinational companies in the pharmaceutical sector, price competition in free market conditions and markets where the public sector is involved, competition between original and generic products will be analyzed. All these analyzes will cover structural adjustment programs that play a role in the formation of a monopolistic market and laws and agreements that protect the interests of multinational corporations. As a result, the effects of the monopolization process on the pharmaceutical sector in Turkey will be examined and the effects of monopolization process in terms of both social and Turkish economy will be discussed.
