Özet (EN)
Biological diversity is a critical concept in conserving natural resources, and it refers to diversity at the genetic, species, and ecosystem levels. Especially in forest ecosystems, this diversity is fundamental for the sustainability of ecosystem processes. Forests play vital ecological and economic roles by providing ecosystem services such as carbon storage, oxygen production, and water cycle regulation. Turkey's forests offer a remarkable richness in this respect; however, the importance of dead trees for the sustainability of this diversity is increasingly emphasized. In addition to contributing to the carbon and nitrogen cycle, dead trees increase soil moisture, expand the habitats of microorganisms, and prevent erosion. The thick-diameter dead trees provide habitats for many animals through the hollows they harbor while providing suitable microclimatic conditions for the germination and growth of young plants. The data obtained in this study in 5 different compartments in Çamkoru Dr. Fuat Adalı Research Forest show that dead trees have a determining effect on rejuvenation processes. It was revealed that the presence of trees killed positively affects sapling density and development and should be considered in sustainable forestry practices. In conclusion, the conservation of dead trees ensures the continuity of biodiversity and makes essential contributions to the ecological balance and sustainable management of forest ecosystems.
