Modeling of premixed flames and investigation of soot formation

The numerical solution of one dimensional laminar premixed flames is important for a better understanding of combustion phenomena, validation and reproduction of experimental data, generation and verification of reaction mechanisms, and forming the basis of multidimensional and/or turbulent flames. In this study, a computer program has been developed that performs numerical analysis of the flame model and, if desired, with the soot analysis. For one dimensional numerical solution of laminar premixed flames, it is necessary to calculate the thermodynamic and the transport properties of gas mixtures and the adiabatic flame temperature, to use chemical kinetic mechanisms, to solve mass and energy conservation equations, the thermodynamic equilibrium solution of gas mixtures and the soot formation model. All these needed equation sets are handled by program itself/subroutines. The program developed within the scope of this study uses only open source/free licensed math libraries outside of its own body. Different flames were modeled with several mixtures methane/ethylene/propane/ hydrogen and their combinations with different oxidizer streams like oxygen/air/oxygen-argon. Different reaction mechanisms tried to be selected for the modeled flames. With these differences, it is emphasized that the written code is compatible with different fuels or fuel mixtures and different oxidizers or reaction mechanisms. The obtained data with the written code and some experimental and/or modeling results in the literature are compared and presented. The adiabatic flame temperature, the equilibrium compositions, the species profiles within the flame and the soot formation data were simulated with different fuels, different equivalence ratios and cold mixture inlet velocities. It was observed that the results were in a good agreement with the literature data.
