Retrospective evalution of cats and dogs brought to Ondokuz Mayis University Veterinary Faculty training-application and research hospital between 2017-2023 with complaints of foreign body ingestion

Foreign bodies in the digestive system are frequently encountered in pet practice and clinical symptoms such as loss of appetite, dehydration, vomiting and diarrhea are observed depending on the location, degree and duration of the obstruction. Depending on the degree of obstruction (complete or partial), these symptoms vary. These foreign bodies are usually encountered in the 0-24 months period and treatment options differ according to their location in the body. The type and shape of the foreign body can provide information on digestive system diseases that may occur after diagnosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and mortality of foreign bodies in the digestive system of cats and dogs brought to Ondokuz Mayıs University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Training-Practice and Research Hospital, Department of Surgery between 2017-2023. The information about the cases included in the study was obtained from the patient registry books of the Surgery Department and the data in the radiology unit, and the percentage distribution and graphic evaluations of the specified criteria were made. A foreign body in the digestive tract was encountered in 108 (0.6%) of all animals brought to the Surgery Department over a seven-year period. In this study, 20,104 patient records who came to our hospital between 2017 and 2023 were examined in order to evaluate the foreign bodies in cats and dogs for specific types of animals, to evaluate some characteristics such as race, age, gender, and to determine the location of the foreign body. As a result of the data obtained, the types of foreign bodies found in cats and dogs; Some data were compiled, such as the location of the foreign body, the presence of foreign body depending on gender, the presence of foreign body in the digestive tract depending on age and race.
