Özet (EN)
In this study, the breathing mechanism in opera art and its proper use have been investigated, while the historical development of opera is briefly summarized within the theoretical framework. In this context, the breathing mechanism, its anatomy, and the significance of breathing in opera art are examined. Additionally, breathing techniques, corrections for errors in breathing usage, and various breathing exercises are included in the study, showcasing different breathing practices and applications. The phases of breathing, techniques for utilizing breath, and the importance of breath control during singing are also explained. One of the significant topics discussed in this thesis is resonance and the importance of resonance spaces. Resonance spaces are utilized in conjunction with airflow during singing. Alongside this, another crucial element, posture, must not be overlooked. Posture, which holds great importance during singing, can also be described as alignment. Incorrect posture can negatively impact proper positioning and breath support, leading to improper breathing. For instance, incorrect posture can cause chest breathing, which is entirely incorrect in vocal technique. All these breathing techniques were developed within the Bel Canto system, which has led to the emergence of many breathing exercises. Apart from the Bel Canto technique, some breathing practices that enhance physical and psychological aspects are also discussed. One of these is the Dutch Wim Hof Method. All these practices are different breathing applications developed from the classical Bel Canto technique. Every opera singer can experiment with different breathing techniques and exercises to find the method that suits them best. Proper breathing can significantly enhance an opera singer's lung capacity, minimize unnecessary air usage, and improve control. In this thesis, the anatomy of the breathing technique used while singing and the formation of sound are explained in detail, accompanied by illustrations for better understanding. Proper breathing is one of the most critical factors that enhance an opera singer's voice and performance quality. In this context, proper breathing techniques, various breathing exercises, and methods for correcting improper breathing are also described.
