Study of articulation in opera singing: Exemplification from Turkish, German, French and Italian works

This study, was carried out with the aim of examining the articulation of Turkish, German, French, Italian arias and lieds in opera singing. For this purpose, the formation process of the human voice is briefly explained, and accordingly, the functional relationship of the human voice on speaking and singing is mentioned. Then, the art of opera was summarized from a historical perspective and its relationship with articulation was examined. The explanations made in the first parts of the study, which consists of five chapters, are dealt with a theoretical approach in particular. Accordingly, the definition of articulation was made, the causes and consequences of correct and wrong articulation were investigated, and exemplification on opera arias and Lieds was made. Sample works were selected from Turkish, German, French and Italian languages, respectively in the following parts of the study and the phonetic rules of these languages were mentioned first. Then, how the works should be articulated within the framework of phonetic rules was examined. In the application part of the study, the works were tried to be articulated correctly according to the articulation features examined, and then the words that were articulated incorrectly were discussed. As a result of the study, within the scope of phonetic rules and features, it has been tried to express that the languages that Turkish singers are most comfortable with, apart from Turkish, are Italian and German, and French is the language with the most difficulty.
