General characteristics of operable lung carcinoma andfactors affecting survival

Introduction: In this study, the general characteristics of operable lung carcinoma and the factors affecting survival were investigated. Material and Method: In this study, we retrospectively reviewed 202 patients with stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3A lung carcinoma who were operated on at the time of diagnosis. Patients with second primary malignancy and severe heart failure were not included in the study. Results: Age, sex, pathologic tumor size, number of removed and positive lymph nodes, histopathological subtype of tumor, tumor grade, presence of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) and perineural invasion (PNI), type of imaging method used for diagnosis, presence or absence of smoking and smoking duration, operation type and the anatomical location of the tumor, total leukocyte (WBC), hemoglobin (HGB), neutrophil (NE), lymphocyte (LY), monocyte (MO) platelet (PLT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total protein, albumin, glucose (GLU), creatinine, sodium, potassium, calcium, C-reactive protein (CRP) levels at the beginning of treatment were evaluated. The effects of these parameters on overall survival and disease-free survival of patients were investigated. In the overall survival analysis, age at diagnosis and presence of LVI were found to be statistically significant. Pathologic tumor size, LVI and PNI parameters were statistically significant for disease-free survival. Conclusion: In the present study, the age of the patients at the time of diagnosis, pathologic tumor size, histopathological subtype, LVI and PNI parameters; when certain cut-off values were used, were found to be useful in predicting patient survival and prognosis.
