Abstract (EN)
Wind and solar energy are becoming increasingly popular due to their abundance, high potential, availability, environmental pollution, and ease in producing electrical energy in the world. In many parts of Somalia, although there is high potential in wind and solar energy, there is energy shortage. This situation is due to lack of security, sufficient information and technology, and financial deficiencies. When the central government of Somalia collapsed in 1991, the energy sector of the country was destroyed. Residents were forced to rely on privately owned diesel generators while many were left in the dark. Somalia is among the least energy consuming countries in the world, and the rate of electricity is one of the highest in the region and the world. The demand for affordable and reliable electricity everywhere in Somalia is high and increasing. Moreover, Somalia suffers from a deficiency of power in rural communities. Only an estimated 15% of the population has a connection to power. In urban areas, 35 % of the population is connected to electricity while in rural areas, only 1 % are connected to electrical services. The country's energy resources to meet its energy needs are domestic wood, charcoal, and imported petroleum. Solar and wind energy offers a way to deliver current energy needs and challenges associated with the country. There is significant potential in all Somali areas in terms of renewable and alternative energy sources like wind and solar energy but so far, due to both security and funding problems, only very small, timid experiments have been carried with solar and wind power. The solar energy potential varies from 5–7kWh/m 2 /day with more than 300 sunny days in a year. Somalia is also identified by powerful winds. Feasibility of Solar-Wind hybrid Energy System in Somalia is presented in this study. Solar and wind energy potentials at different geographic locations in Somalia was investigated then selected location is analyzed using Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables (HOMER) software tool. The average electric load demand of a sampled area was estimated and a feasibility study on how to provide energy to a measured area was presented. A analyze of the technical and the economic feasibility of the chosen combination system for electric generation is presented. the amount of electricity production and capacity factors of three selected wind turbines at three different location are estimated annually. cost investigation of investment of wind turbine and economic profitability also is presented.
