SUMMARYThesis of High Master?s DegreeHuman and Economic Geography of Ören Stream (Elazığ) BasinErkan YILDIZThe University of FıratThe Institute of social ScienceThe Deparment of GeographyELAZIĞ-2006, Page: XV+ 201The Ören Stream basın is in the East Anatolian and The Upper Euphrates Partand in the South-West of Elazığ city. As a physical unit, Ören Stream basin issurrounded by Koyunoğlu Ridge in the North, Kızıldağ (1341m) in the North-East,Meryem Mountain (1469m) in the East, Pirhasan (2004m) in the South, Pulutlu andHeybeli Mountains (2110m) in the South and Hasan Mountain (2110m) in the North-West. According to human factors, it?s in the middle of a tringle that, Elazığ city of andSivrice town is in the South-East. It has 295.215 decares surface area.Ören Stream basin had been so affected by the Alpine Orogenic Movements inthe 3rd Geological Period. In this period, mountainous areas, various depreciativesurfaces, basin base, valley base and such different morphological units had beenoccurred.The highest point of Ören Stream basin is Hasan Mountain with a 2110 metersheight. The lowest place is Hankendi Plain that has 1100-1200 meters height and alsoHankendi town is there. The outer part of the Ören Stream basin is not boundednaturally by topographic units as mountains hill, ridge etc. But also seems as plateauscharacteristics.Between 1935-2000 years period, some terms decreasing had been seen due tothe global and our national development, natural and human factors affected the risingand decreasing of the population. The rising and decreasing of that is affected by theInatural human factors, arithmetically, the greatness of the settlements, gender andphysical educational position change had been provided. The most importantcharacteristic of Ören Stream basin according to population is large amount ofmigration in summer and winter terms between country and urban settlements. As aresult of that, in our research area in summer and winter terms different populationdensity is seen.It?s not known certainly that. The first settlements in which date or from whomhad been occurred, in Ören Stream basin, historians can guess some decisions aboutÖren Stream basin settlement history by the historical knowledge of neighbor states (asHarput, Baskil, etc.). According to the researches, the histories of the settlements hadbeen seen in B.C. 4000-5000. Today, temporary settlements, vineyard-garden, halo,sand-marble settlements and permanent settlements, towns, villages, ward and industry-service settlements are seen. At the beginning, the natural factors of the natural factorsare affected in choice and continuous of settlements but the human factors effects areseen in the foundation period of the settlements.The main economic activity in Ören Stream basin is agriculture. The most partof the lands are (% 56) pasture. Waterless agriculture lands are in the first raw. The firstand important condition needed for the agricultural activity is wheat and barley sowing.Leguminous plants are sow as a secondary product. Industrial plants, fat seeds, fodderplants, cattle-dealing, vineyard, garden and vegetable agricultural activities are other theeconomic activities.In today, due to the increasing population and economic activity of Elazığ city,with the actuantage of the Elazığ-Malatya road, has been an area that in service andsmall industrial product, in our research district. This situation is an advantage for beingattractiveness center for population and settlement for our research.I have done this study called ?Human and Economic Geography of ÖrenStream Basin? with an aim, explain the needs hopes and problems of the population inÖSB and solve in a geographical approach and also to watch for the result in thefollowing years, to compare and to test and explain.Key Words: Ören Stream basin, Hankendi, Town, Tansportain, Population, Settlement,Economic activityII
