The effect of organizational culture of operating room nurses on patient safety

This study is conducted in a descriptive relational character to determine the effect of organizational culture of operating room nurses regarding patient safety. The universe of the research is composed of nurses (n = 220) actively working in operating rooms of an accredited private hospital, a non-accredited private hospital, a university hospital, a training and research hospital, and a state hospital all operating in Istanbul, and the sample is composed of nurses (n = 190) who have at least one-year operating room experience in the selected institutions, and who volunteered to participate in the research. Before collecting the necessary data, written consent was obtained from Social Sciences Researches Ethics Committee of Koç University and related institutions, and verbal consent from the nurses. Introductory Characteristics Form (9 questions), Denison Organization Culture Scale, and Patient Safety Culture Scale were used in the collection of data. Data collection forms were filled by nurses. Bartlett test, ANOVA, Sidak test, and Spearman's correlation coefficient were used in the evaluation of the data. In this study, which is conducted in a descriptive relational character to determine the effect of organizational culture of operating room nurses regarding patient safety, it is determined that organizational culture has a positive effect on patient safety culture. The average of Denison Organizational Culture Scale is X=3.11±0.57, while Patient Safety Culture Scale is (PSCS) X=2.88±0.48. Depending on these results, it is suggested that planning should be done in order for patient safety to be a part of organizational culture.
