Teachers and administrators opinions on organizational citizenship behavior and problem solving skills

The general aim of this study is to define the teachers? and administrators? opinions, who are working in the city center of Bolu and the central district elementary schools, on organizational citizenship behavior and problem solving skills.The population consists of the teachers and administrators that were working in elementary schools in the central district of Bolu in 2009 ? 2010 second semester. Within the population, there are 32 elementary schools, 960 elementary school teachers and 76 administrators. In the study, 24 elementary schools and 373 elementary school teachers and 51 administrators are defined by stratified sampling method to present the population.Scanning method was used in the study. The data collecting tool of the study is composed of three sections. In the first section, personal information form was used to gather the personal data of teachers and administrators; in the second section, 22 behavior items in ?Örgütsel Vatandaşlık Davranışı Ölçeği? adapted by Karakuş in order to be used in his doctoral dissertation based on ?Organizational Citizenship Behaviors Scale? developed by Podsakoff, MacKenzie, Moorman and Fetter (1990). In the third section, ?Problem Solving Inventory? which was developed by P. P. Heppner and C. H. Peterson in order to measure the problem solving skills, and later adapted to Turkish by Şahin, Şahin and Heppner (1993) was used in the study. The scale was completed by 51 administrators and 373 teachers working at elementary schools.The collected data was analyzed by using SPSS**12.00 packaged software. In analyzing the data, percentage, frequency, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, one way analysis of variance (one-way anova), independent groups (unbound sampling), t-test, Mann Whitney U test, and Kruskal Wallis test were used.The following results were reached in the study:Both the administrators ( =4,58) and the teachers ( =4,26 ) replied at ?strongly agree? level in the general total of organizational citizenship scale.About the problem solving skills, both the teachers ( =4, 37) and the administrators ( =4, 32) replied at ?frequently? level.The elementary school administrators? opinions related to organizational citizenship do not indicate significant difference in age, gender, state of education, tenure variables. The teachers? opinions related to organizational citizenship revealed significant difference in all the variables. Significant difference has been found in sportsmanship lower dimension under age variable, altruism under gender variable, all lower dimensions except for conscientiousness under state of education variable; conscientiousness and sportsmanship under branch variable, courtesy and civic virtue under tenure variable.The opinions of elementary school administrators on problem solving skills didn?t appear in any of age, gender, tenure or state of education variables. While the teachers? opinions didn?t show significant difference under age variable, under other variables significant difference is determined. Significant difference has been found in approach-avoidance style lower dimension, personal control and problem solving confidence lower dimensions under state of education variable, personal control and problem solving confidence lower dimensions under branch variable, approach-avoidance style lower dimension under tenure variable.Elementary school administrators? opinions show significant difference between organizational citizenship behavior and problem solving skills. Also, it is defined that teachers? opinions indicate significant difference between organizational citizenship behavior and problem solving skills.Key Words: Administrator, Teacher, Problem Solving, Organizational Citizenship Behavior
