Analysis of Orhan Veli Kanık's stories in terms of vocabulary

Orhan Veli, one of the leading names of the Republican Period Turkish literature and the Garip movement, showed his success in the prose type with the stories he wrote apart from his poems. Orhan Veli, who has seven stories, one of which is a free translation, also gives the irony in his poems to his stories. By displaying sections from the lives of ordinary people in his stories, he forces the reader to consider the moments and events that appear trivial and are not worth considering. A section of life, a moment of the day, the demands of the ordinary person, the life of fishers, and people living around the sea constitute the theme of his stories. In his stories, he infiltrates the reader's mind through words. In the study, the connection between Orhan Veli's perception of art, his perspective on life, people, and society and his vocabulary was analyzed. By reviewing the vocabulary elements in his stories in detail, a study was conducted from the word, which is the smallest unit of the sentence, to word groups. The study has three parts. In the first part, information on the life of Orhan Veli, his works, and his stories that were examined was presented. In the second part, the vocabulary and word groups of Turkish were described in detail with the method of literature review. In the third chapter, the vocabulary analysis of Orhan Veli's stories was conducted, and the words in each story were grouped by filing methods according to their functions based on the context in which they were employed in the sentence. The items of vocabulary that display the material and moral values, customs, and relationships between individuals, such as reduplication, idiom, particular phrases (relationship words), were illustrated by witness sentences. The vocabulary components were evaluated with numerical data, considering the frequency of use, which means how much they were employed in stories and their proportions in existing words. On the other side, word groups were classified individually and expres-sed with witness sentences and proportional figures. Abundant information concerning the vocabulary was collected in Orhan Veli's nonvoluminous stories. The constant repetition of specific words in these stories, the subtle use of phrases, reduplication, and idioms, the richness of word groups exhibits his contribution to vocabulary.
