The image of the Church in Medieval themed films

Cinema has been used as a source in various fields since its emergence. One of these fields is history. The fact that cinema witnesses the events of the period and presents sections of the period reveals that it is an important source for history. This study aims to understand the concepts and themes through which the Church is portrayed in the films depicting the Middle Ages as a historical period. Within the framework of the findings obtained from sources such as films, books and articles, it aimed to understand how the image of the Church was handled through cinema in a historical period, taking into account the conditions of the period from the perspective of a historian. In the first part of our study, the importance of the research, the method and the sources of the research are given. In the second chapter, the relationship between cinema and history is explained and necessary explanations are made by taking into account the opinions of the authors on this subject. In the third chapter, the concept of the church, its size, nature, mission and the metaphors used for the church are mentioned. In the fourth section, ten films set in the Middle Ages in which the church is at the forefront are included and the films are evaluated within the framework of historical sources.
