An area survey about the essay examination’s questions in language and expression course of first grade of secondary schools

ABSTRACT In this research, measurement and evaluation quality of Language and Expression course essay examination questions were investigated. To identify the quality of questions, totally 555 essay questions from 38 Turkish Language and Literature course teachers from Kırsehir were collected in 2006-2007 first semester. Also a questionnaire which consisted of 50 items was applied to these teachers. In the first part of the questionnaire, there were questions to collect general information about teachers. In the second part, there were questions to identify the attitudes of teachers towards measurement and evaluation. Then, the answers for the first part of the questionnaire and the second part were compared. There was not a significant relationship between the mesarument and evaluation quality of essay questions and personal properties such as gender, the universty and department graduated from and inservice training attended. On the other hand, a significant relationship between the measurement and evaluation quality of exam questions and seniority of teachers was found. The quality of questions prepared by teachers with 21-25 years seniority were found higher than the questions prepared by teachers with 6-10 years seniority. The questions collected from teachers in the first semester were classified according to the Bloom?s taxonomy. 305 (%54,95) of questions were in knowledge level, 37 (%6,66) of questions were in comprehension level, 206 (%37,11) of questions were in application level, 3 (%0,54) of questions were in analysis level and 4 (%0,72) of questions were in synthesis level. In addition, there were no questions found in evaluation level. Lastly, data collected from the answers given to the questionnaire by teachers and data collected from evaluation of essay questions by the researcher were compared. As a result, it was found that there is a difference between the theoritical knowledge of teachers and their applications.
