Learning skills of high school 10th grade students on the words of 9th grade textbooks Turkish literature and language and expression

Language is the mirror of ideas and ideas are shared by words. Your expression is either written or oral it comes alive by words. Thus, in order to have a good communication one needs to have an good enough vacobulary level.One of the main problems encountered in our education system is the insufficent vocabulary level of students. In our education programs the number of words that has to be known by students at a certain level is well determined.The objective of this thesis is to analyse the learning skills of high school 10th grade students on the words of 9th grade textbooks ?Turkish Literature? and ?Language and Expression?. On this scope, we studied on 460 High School 10th grade students from 2009/2010 Education Year selected by random sampling method. Within the context of study, data is collected by applying a test consisting of two parts. In the first part, students are asked to fiil a personal data form, which has 27 items. As the second part of test, the mean of the words given at the dictionary part of the 9th grade level textbooks ?Turkish Literature? and ?Language and Expression? is asked in a classical way.Indeed, the mean of words would has been asked in two different ways. One of them is the classical way, which is the case in this thesis. The other way is the selective technique. The reason why we use the classical way instead of selective technique in this study is simply to avoid the student to estimate the answer of question or give a random answer. Using the selective technique would have affected the reliablity of our results.As it is said, the test mentioned above is applied to the 10th grade students. Collected data is used to analyse how many of words given at the dictionary part of the 9th grade level textbooks ?Turkish Literature? and ?Language and Expression? could have been learned. In the evaluation, the National Education System is used to score the result of students. According to this system, students who gave correct answer to the 45% of total questions are considered as successful. The questions from the dictionary part of ?Turkish Literature? and ?Language and Expression? textbooks are evaluated separately.In the conclusion part, the results are discussed. It is shown that the vocabulary level of students changes depending on the age, sex, culture, environment and geographical areas. Furthermore, our results reflects the fact that students can not learn well enough the mean of words given at the dictionary part of textbooks ?Turkish Literature? and ?Language and Expression?. Considering the environmental condition of students these result are evaluated and eventually some advises and perspective are given to improve the vocabulary level.Key words: word, vocabulary, word teaching, mother tongue conclusion and proposal.
