Identifiying scientific literacy level of ninth grade students in secondary school

The aim of this study is to identify scientific literacy level of ninth grade students. In this study, it is examined whether there is a significant relation between students? scientific literacy level and type of school, educational status of parents, whether they have their own room or not, following a scientific journal, family?s monthly income, frequency of connecting to internet and its purpose, having technologic equipments in their houses and academic achievement in physic courses or not.Scientific Literacy Scale ,developed by Keskin (2008), was used to identify scientific literacy level of students.Data were obtained from 97 students who were enrolled in the ninth grade of girls? vocational school and relgious vocational school in Çamlıdere county of Ankara in 2011-2012 academic year. Arithmetic mean, standart deviation, analysis of variance and correlation analysis were used in the analysis of data.The results, obtained from these data, showed that while there was not significant correlation between students? scientific literacy level and type of school, educational status of parents, whether they have their own room or not, following scientific journal, monthly income of family, frequency of connecting to internet and academic success in physic lesson, it seen that there is significant correlation between students? scientific literacy level and gender, the purpose of connecting to internet, the situation of providing technologic equipment in their houses.
