Investigating a connectivist mobile learning process for improving English oral skills in high school

The aim of this study is to investigate a connectivist mobile learning process designed to improve speaking skills in an 11. grade English class. In this holistic single case study, six connectivist mobile learning activities designed on the basis of the learning outcomes of a secondary English curriculum. The activities were performed via social networks Blog, Facebook, WhatsApp, Skype and the principles of connectivism were followed. The participants of the study were fifteen 11th grade students, their parents and English teacher residing in Bursa. The participants performed the activities through their personal learning environments they created on their mobile phones. While analyzing the data collected, content and descriptive analyses were carried out. The results of the study shows that the participants had positive and similar expectations from the activity, their participations were prepared, asynchorous, synchorous or indirect, the participants' feelings changed from negative to positive during the activities, most of the participants found the activity entertaining and useful, the speaking scores of the students in the activity were above the average score and the expectations of the participants were mostly met in spite of the problems experienced during the learning process. As a conlusion, the connectivist mobile learning process provided an enjoyable and flexible learning experience, assisted improving students' speaking skills.
