Comparison of the curriculum program of geography lesson in secondary education institutes with the geography questions asked in university examinations

In the research, the education programmes in the high school in geography lessons and the questions asked in the university examination in the same field were compared. In order to necessary information for the research, a detailed litterateur search had been made. In the litterateur search, lecture books and education programmes were examined which were approved by Drill and Training Council of Ministry of Education. Questions asked in the ÖSS and ÖYS university examinations (1982-2001) were examined and classified according to both years and topics. Frequency of the topics were determined and compared if they were suitable with the education programmes or not. Under the light of information gathered, these are the result: A disorder was determined in the distribution between the topics and years of geography lessons in the education programmes and the questions asked in the university exam. Weekly lecture hours of geography lessons and the representation of geography in the university examinations are not in correspondence. Questions asked in the university examinations in geography during 1982-2001, were mostly composed of the subjects physical geography and geography of Turkey. Although there does not exist a subject in the education programmes of high school geography called "Social and Economic Geograpy", an important ratio of questions were asked in university exams about social and economic geography.
