An investigation of the students' views on English language teaching process in secondary education

In this study, the views of high school students' on teaching English were examined. Survey method was used for this study. The data was collected by means of a questionnaire of 'The Views on English Language Teaching Process' that was developed by the researcher. The sample of the research consisted of 1245 high school students in the central districts of Malatya in 2018- 2019 academic year. The frequencies of students' general opinions on teaching process of the lesson were calculated from the collected data. Also, Chi Square Test was done in terms of the students' grade, classroom size and the higher education graduate program of English language teachers. After the results of the data analysis, findings of the study were compared with the findings of the literature. According to the students' views, teachers do not attract their students' attention to the lesson at the beginning of the lesson however they try to motivate the learners towards the lesson. Teachers mostly teach grammar and use translation method during the courses, so they do not use different activities in the lessons. Also, listening activities have been done more than other skills. In the lessons, not many materials and equipment have been used apart from the interactive board and dictionaries. The teachers succeed in making their students participate in the lessons and they finish courses according to the stages of a lesson. Finally, there have been significant differences in the students' views about English language teaching process in terms of the research variables. Based on these results, more practices have been suggested in English courses. Besides, various sampling research methods have been suggested on how to teach English.
